At our Lovelace Family Medicine, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to ensure the well-being of our patients. One of the key services we offer is colonoscopy, a vital procedure for maintaining colon health and early detection of colorectal issues.
What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a procedure used to examine the inner lining of your large intestine (colon and rectum) using a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope. This instrument is equipped with a small camera at its tip, allowing our physician to view the inside of your colon and identify any abnormalities such as polyps, tumors, or inflammation.
Why is a Colonoscopy Important?
Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer: Colonoscopies are the most effective method for detecting colorectal cancer early when it is most treatable.
Diagnosis of Digestive Issues: If you are experiencing unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or rectal bleeding, a colonoscopy can help diagnose the underlying cause.
Removal of Polyps: During the procedure, any polyps found can often be removed immediately, which can prevent them from becoming cancerous.
Dr. Chip Dixon performs all colonoscopy procedures at Newberry Hospital. With a commitment to patient care and a wealth of expertise, Dr. Dixon ensures that each patient receives the highest quality of care in a comfortable and safe environment.
What to Expect
Preparation: Before the procedure, you will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare, including dietary restrictions and bowel cleansing.
Procedure: On the day of the colonoscopy, you will be given a sedative to ensure your comfort. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
Recovery: After the procedure, you will rest in our recovery area until the sedative wears off. You will need someone to drive you home as the sedative effects may last for several hours.
Results: Dr. Dixon will discuss the results with you and provide recommendations for any follow-up care if needed.
